Assessment
How will we know if each student has learned what we have taught?
Our 2 main types of assessment are formative and summative.
* Formative assessment is “assessment for learning,” meaning that it takes place expressly to inform instruction.
As part of our formative assessment, we will be using claims and evidence pieces in order to determine level of understanding. A claims and evidence piece needs to be completed each week, during the start of gray matter. During the first semester, the teacher will create the prompt that the learners should respond to. It should take 10-20 minutes.
During the second semester you may want your learners to begin to create their own prompts.
There are three formats that you can use.
The first is geared towards K-1 and has areas for the learner to draw their evidence. The teacher will create the prompt for the learners. Click here.
The second is geared towards 1-2 grade learners, with an area for drawing and lines for written description. Click here.
The third is geared towrds 3-5 grade learners. It has more lines for written evidence and some room to draw the evidence as well. Click here.
PLEASE NOTE: Feel free to use whichever form you feel is best for your learners!!!!
*Summative assessment as described by NCDPI is “a measure of achievement to provide evidence of student competence or program effectiveness”
