Process for Referring a Child to RTI
· Process - The Student Support Team (SST) is a regular education function. SST provides a place to discuss student concerns in a supportive open environment. It is dynamic, interactive, and controlled at the building level. At the core of SST, is the atmosphere of support and collegiality for classroom teachers, family members, and colleagues to generate strategies that facilitate student success in the classroom. The bottom line is student success. To generate strategies, SST uses a systematic 6-Step process Instructional Strategy Planning (ISP). The six steps of the ISP provide the SST members with a structure for sharing their expertise and exploring strategies for students. Team members work collaboratively to develop effective interventions and strategies for students experiencing behavior and academic problems. SST looks at the whole child taking a holistic approach and focusing on the student’s strengths. The 6-step Instructional Strategy Planning used in SST is a collaborative proactive problem solving approach. It can be used outside of SST meetings between a teacher and student, at a grade or department meeting or in other meetings where the child’s educational needs are discussed.
